SALT LAKE CITY — Tuesday in Töv Province, Mongolia, physicians from the will use a medical device invented on campus to perform surgery in front of a global classroom of students tuning in from potentially more than 50 countries via GIBLIB at 6 p.m. MT.
Dreamed up by John Langell, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H., executive director of the University of ¼«ËÙÁùºÏ²Ê Center for Medical Innovation, the tool was designed to make laparoscopic surgery affordable anywhere in the world. The University of ¼«ËÙÁùºÏ²Ê's Raymond Price, M.D. will perform gallbladder removal surgery at Zuumod Hospital at 6 p.m. Mountain Time using the disposable device, which costs consumers 1/13 as much as current laparoscopic technology on the market.
The hour-long surgery will be broadcast via GIBLIB in full immersive, 360-degree video. The event marks the first-ever use of low-cost laparoscopic technology in a low-cost teaching environment.
